In most of the Caribbean counties, the people look forward with great expectation to the popular carnival celebration. For most of the islands of the Caribbean, the pageantry, the sound, the various competitions make these festival the primer festival. But this is not so in Dominica.

Most Dominican look forward to the independence celebration. To Dominican; independence represents a sense of national pride and this can be seen in the turnout at the various cultural shows that are organized island wide during the month of October.

The daily appearance of the island's natives dressed in their national cultural outfits as they go about their daily duties. These outfits are worn while going to work, attending functions or even going shopping. this in its self is a splendid demonstration of the pride that engulfs this people around independence. The song writers, write songs which are laced with lyrics that depict national pride and nation building.

The radio station plays the Creole song, the television stations are saturated with cultural activities, and it seems like the natives cannot get enough. The central talking point of the Island is centered on attending and participating in the cultural activities; School children and adults alike can be heard singing the folk song, and very often they can be seen publicly trotting out the steps that accompany the songs.

The Natural Environment

Unlike most of its sister isle, Dominic volcanic origin has blessed the island with many beautiful tropical features. These ranged from beautiful mountain ranges, lush green valleys, refreshing rivers, springs (hot and cold) and revitalizing lakes.

Below I will attempt to please your eyes with some of the natural beauty of Dominica. These photos captured the beauty and splendor of the Island. These features seem to have a life and language of there own. They not only help to refresh you but calms and relax you also.

You can be enclosed in the awesome beauty of nature and enjoy the tranquility that such brings. You can take a dip in one of the many rivers, lakes, hot or cold water spring and experienced the healing qualities the sulfur springs possesses.

There are many places in Dominica where you can enjoy the ambiance and service that makes eating out a pleasure. I have been privilege to have dine at some nice places where the attendants provides the customers with the best in friendly service. I have also eaten at many small establishments that offers some of the most delicious cuisine anywhere in Dominica.

The Garage

The Garage is house in one of Dominica's beautiful brick buildings, it has the natural rustic look that is inviting and relaxing. The garage offers a wide verity of local, homemade, and imported drinks. they also offers a menu that caters for the local pallet as well as the taste of the conversational eater. The Garage biggest asset is its staff. The girl that caters for your needs are not only helpful they are also friendly. and expresses a genuine joy to serve you. Just ask for Mueva and she will take care of all of your dining need.

The Guiyave

The Guiyave offers a buffet style lunch that is delicious but quite costly, they to also have friendly staff who are willing to serve you. they have a wide ranges of drinks and food to satisfy the your eating needs. apart from being quite expensive and small it is worth your time to check it out.

The Calaloo

The calaloo is certainly the place to be. there you will he happily served your meal with a smile. The food is delicious and the staffs are wonderful. they are ready and willing to satisfy your conversation need if you so wish. They will make you want to return to this facility to not only enjoy the foods, the drinks but the love that is present there.

The Food Shops

If you are the adventurous type you can drop into one of the small family establishment, although their facilities may not be as nice as the those listed above they offers a friendly home style atmosphere. Here you get the good down home finger licking cooking the type of delicious food that make you want to crush your bones and lick your fingers.

Don't be afraid to drop into one of these establishment and savor the wonder of friendship and good food. I have tried a few and totally enjoyed myself. lol.

Jane the Sea Moss Queen

Dominica has a tropical climate. At times when the sun shines down in all of its glory and the tropical heat and the humidity seems to be getting the better of you. You could do one of two things: You can find the nearest river, strip down to your under ware and take a plunge into one of the three hundred and sixty five rivers; or you can drop by to see Jane at the Junction of Independence Street and Kennedy Avenue in the city of Roseau; there you will find the beautiful sea moss Queen, just waiting to offer you a drink of her refreshing brew.

Each morning when most of Dominica is still sleeping, Jane the Sea Moss Queen is up at 4:00 a.m. preparing a fresh batch of her unique brew. This is Jane way of keeping the community happy. She makes and bottles a fresh batch of her tasty, invigorating and refreshing beverage daily. It is Jane’s delight to ensure the hard working people of Roseau and the tourist that visit the island gets fresh Sea Moss daily. The Sea Moss is believed to have some special properties and is used as a natural male sexual enhancer. The confession of Jane's customers bear testimoney to this.

The main ingredient in this converted drink is a sea weed that is from the the Gracilaria family. The plant is grown on the sea floor and is harvested by divers, dried and boiled to extract the nutrients.

When you visits Dominica and you are in Roseau, just pay Jane a visit and try a point of her refreshing, invigorating and appetizing of Sea Moss. Then return home and climb Space Mountain.

Historic Buildings Of Dominica

Like most countries, Dominica has its share of public historic buildings. Historic buildings speak volume about the people of the pass. It tells a story of the people who finance the construction of those edifices, the skills of the designers and the builders; it also speak of their taste, their wealth, lack of wealth etc.

The type of building the people worshiped in tells how serious they take religion, the level of the influence the clergy had on their congregations and the level of social influence the church wanted or intended to have in the community.

Below I will introduce you to a few of my favorite historic public landmarks in Dominica; unfortunately they are all religious building and were owned by the three major religion of yesterday: the Roman Catholic

The Most Beautiful Houses

You will see a large variety of the buildings on this site, you have seen domestic, commercial as well as building that has dual purpose which are both domestic and commercial that gave Roseau Dominica a unique touch. This page deals with the building I thought have some of the most unique features and these features ranges from simplicity, artistry, design, color, uniqueness etc. I will attempt to outline my reason for selecting the buildings that are displayed on this page. Tell me, what is your opinion of my choices?

Left is a building that is uniquely decorated by the tropical weather, the rustic look gave this cottage a very unique appearance that only nature can create. Its painted doors and windows make this building a classic work of art.

(Above) This Building is a ventilation master piece. This building represents a design that is intended to combat the tropical heat. The time and thought that went into ensuring that this house was properly ventilates can be seen in the amount and strategically placed windows as well as the utilization of the attic not for living but for cooling the building. the veranda is not only a place where one can relax when it is hot, it also lends to the beauty of the building.

This building has a unique roof and was designed to facilitate proper ventilation, the small veranda with canopy lends a unique twist to this house.

This house represents simplicity complexity and color. Such bright colorful home were common in the Caribbean. the simplicity of the building can be seen in the poach retainers, and the complexity of this building can be seen in the moulding between the roof and the poach.

This house is the Catholic Bishop's residence, it is a simple stone building that was bind with limestone. The building has a veranda that encircles its perimeter and provices shelter to the ground floor it also seperates the ground floor from the top floor. The large and numerous windows facilitate ventilation. the add on to this building give it such a unique appearance that make it a very beautiful building.

This building is a nicely decorated building with a unique veranda that allows for two way traffic, it has a nice array of artistry and style to it.

This building is a classic Stone building with lime stone binding, this building represents an experimental error in construction. Although wooden buildings are naturally cooler that wall or stone building; you will noticed that the number of windows are far less than the wooden buildings.

This is a unique building consist of a stone ground floor with a red brick top floor which is held together by a limestone binding. It is as well ventilated as the wooden building. The metal veranda retainers give the building a very modern yet classic look. this is surly a beautiful building.

This is a simple house, its strange design resulted in all of the ventilation on the northern side of the building. I am not sure the logic behind this design but it is surely a unique house.

Beautiful Architecture of Dominica

Although Dominica is know as the nature isles, there are much more to the naturally beautiful island than it’s natural beauty. The capital Roseau boasts some of the most beautiful building in the Caribbean; most of which were constructed in the early 1900s and the 1800s. Although there are many modern buildings within the capital there is also a combination of stone and wooden building that litters the main town; this add a special uniqueness to the small town of Roseau.

Most of the Buildings are constructed of wood. Here you can observe the simple details that make these buildings beautiful. The artistry, architecture and craftsmanship are also exhibited in the work of the artisans. Many of the houses are colorfully decorated while others were decorated but the tropical weather, giving them a natural beauty that brings out the character of the building.

The houses ranged from flat one bed room cottages to two stories multipurpose buildings. You can also find limestone base stone buildings as well as combination of concrete and wooden buildings. Come now, let’s view the beautiful houses of the Common Wealth of Dominica.
